Do you want to cut down on your expenses? Every little bit counts, and the $50-$100 or more you’ll save every year on kids pajamas can go toward other things you need or just in savings to build up your emergency fund. With three kids, I’ve learned some tricks about saving money on pajamas. Here are my tips.
Buy every other size
Children grow quickly, so for pajamas, I always skip a size. because this is night time wear, the pajamas don’t have to fit perfectly. Also, most pajamas are pretty roomy width- wise, so even the smaller sizes aren’t tight. I leave my kids in the smaller size for a few extra months until they are really short and then jump to two sizes larger. This saves us half of our pajama bill, and the kids say it doesn’t make a difference to them.
Remake the footies
For footie pajamas, you can cut out the feet to get anywhere from six months to an entire extra year out of them. Of course, we only do this for the last child who will wear them, since we save hand-me-down clothes.
Substitute adult clothes
In the summer, adult t-shirts make nice night gowns for girls. You can even pretty them up a bit with iron ons or puff paint. By using some extra t-shirts that you already have, you save money. Just a warning, these tend not to have the non-flammable coating. Personally, since I don’t let my children near anything that might make them catch on fire in the middle of the night (or ever) and I haven’t seen any research supporting the use of the coating, non-flammable pjs aren’t a huge concern for me.
Shop smart for new
When buying new pjs, there are a couple of sources and strategies that I employ. One is to buy them off season, purchasing the next size that I will need. This can save a ton. The other way is to check out the discount rack for t-shirts, sweat shirts and sweat pants. These can double as both regular or play clothes and pjs, saving you money.
