Are you ready for some football? Arizona Cardinal and Pittsburgh Steeler fans are counting down the minutes until tomorrow’s Super Bowl kickoff. Even if your team didn’t make it to the big game, you can still join in the pigskin festivities by hosting your own Super Bowl party.
Here are some tips for creating a winning look for Sunday’s major match-up:
DECORATIONS
Party stores are filled with Super Bowl paraphernalia. However, you can save a bundle by going generic. Simply purchase balloons, streamers, and tablecloths to match your favorite team’s colors. Then, get your kids involved in the decorating process by having them cut out football shapes from brown construction paper and hang them around the house.
Another inexpensive idea: Cover your party table with green butcher paper and use white paint to make the gridiron. Next, embellish the “field” with stadium cups filled with gumballs, power bars, peanuts, popcorn and beef jerky. Add some Gatorade to the table along with a centerpiece of football cupcakes.
FOOD
Super Bowl-inspired cupcakes are a breeze to make (and they are a lot cheaper than buying the pre-decorated ones from the bakery or grocery store). Simply, bake traditional vanilla cupcakes and top them with green frosting (that’s the turf). Then, pipe on white icing to make the yard lines. Finally, top each with a brown chocolate Jelly Belly “football.”
You could also make football cookies using a football shaped cookie cutter and decorating them with frosting and sprinkles. Put the cookie cutter to use again by creating football shaped sandwiches for the kids.
GAMES
If you are watching the games with young children be prepared to take a few time outs when they start getting antsy. If indoor football is not an option in your home, then inflate several brown balloons and decorate them like footballs. Each time a commercial comes on have the kids try to keep the “ball” off of the ground with gentle taps. Another way to keep kids busy is to set up an obstacle course in an open area. Time each child as he or she races through a maze of chairs, pillows, boxes, etc. You can also set out jump ropes to make the course more challenging.
