Leak detection systems in your home can alert you to and even prevent water damage to your home. There is so much loss that can occur through water damage, from favorite photos and papers to your entire house. it can occur at any time. If you want to consider using a leak detection system, there are some choices that you will need to make.
The first decision to make with a leak detection system is to find out whether or not you want a system that will alert you that there is a problem so you can take your own action, or a system that will automatically shut off water valves.
Water Alarms
Water alarms will use an audible tone to let you know that there is a water problem. Some systems also offer a flashing light. They are usually stand alone systems that operate by battery, so they are easy to install and to operate. You can choose from systems that sit on the floor and detect water, or ones that can be hung on a wall. With the wall-mounted system, a moisture detector sits on the floor. Water alarms are inexpensive, costing between $8 and $45 to purchase. Because they are battery operated, you will need to check the system and change the batteries as needed.
Automatic Water Shutoff Systems
Automatic water shutoff systems also usually sound an alarm, but then they take action by operating a shutoff valve. These systems either use a moisture sensor or a flow sensor and timer to detect water problems. You can have a shutoff system that operates only for a single appliance, such as a washing machine, or for an entire house. Installation can range in difficulty, depending on the system that you choose, so you may be able to install the automatic water shutoff system yourself, or you may need to call in a plumber. The cost of an automatic water shutoff systems ranges between $50 and $150, but you will need one for each appliance or valve. An entire house system can cost $500 to $1500.
