Weight Loss: How Important Are The Numbers To You?

Going back about 20 years ago I read somewhere that your ideal body weight was measured as starting at 5 feet and 100 pounds for woman. As each inch was added, it was calculated as an additional 5 pounds. For example, a woman that was 5 feet 2 inches tall should weigh 110 pounds and a woman that was 5 feet 5 inches should weigh 125 pounds. This way of measuring did not take in consideration the frame of the body. I followed this rule of thumb and I looked almost skeletal, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was thin and healthy. This same rule applied for a man although his starting weight was 107 pounds with each additional inch of height providing him 7 pounds.

New charts have emerged since then allowing poundage that is more liberal for both the male and the female. Not only more liberal are these charts in terms of pounds, but also body frame size is a determining factor in the configuration of an ideal weight goal. To explore what some deem ideal weight and frame size you can determine yours at the following website according to this popular insurance company:

How important are the numbers to you though? This is the real deciding factor. As long as you are healthy, as evaluated by your physician, are the numbers really that important? Do you feel “right” at 10 pounds over what these charts suggest? One woman at 130 pounds may look quite a bit different from another woman at the same weight and height. We all carry our weight in different areas. If you are happy, healthy, and reasonably fit then the numbers should not distress you too much. If you are obsessively striving to be that “perfect” number in order to be healthy you may be doing your body more harm than good. This way of thinking could be more damaging and stressful than the 10 pounds you feel you need to lose in order to be healthy and fit.

Eat healthy, make good choices, stay active, and live a lifestyle that is healthy and pure.
