Affordable Family Ski Adventures

Nothing says fun like shooshing down a freshly groomed mountain on a sunny winter day with family and friends. Now, imagine how much more fun you could have knowing that you could hit the slopes without breaking the bank.

In an effort to attract travel-weary, penny-pinching families right now, ski resorts from Maine to California are offering cost-saving deals, with Salt Lake City-area resorts offering some of the most incredible bargains. In addition, since 11 ski areas are located within an hour of the airport, competition among city hotels yields substantial savings too. Another way to keep money in your pocket is to take public transit rather than renting a vehicle. Salt Lake City offers skiers exceptional bus service to and from the slopes.

If you are looking for exceptional family-friendly fun on the snowcapped ridges of the Wasatch Mountains, consider the following money-saving options:

ALTA SKI AREA

The mountain is known for its mix of deep powder, advanced terrain and gentle slopes. Alta is also historic in that it is the home of the state’s first chairlift, installed in 1939. For $64 per day, an adult can snag lift tickets and access to 2,200 skiable acres.

Deal: During the month of March you will receive four nights (Sunday-Thursday only) at the Peruvian Lodge with all meals, three days of lift tickets, airport transfers and taxes for just $214 a night a person.

SOLITUDE MOUNTAIN RESORT

This popular Alpine village fronts uncrowded slopes and caters to intermediate skiers who love wide-open runs but hate waiting in line. The area underwent a renovation about a decade ago, which resulted in the construction of a European-style village with several condominium buildings, townhouses, an inn and restaurants at its base. Adult lift tickets cost $61 each, and provide access to 1,200-plus acres of terrain, plus eight lifts, including three high-speed chairs.

Deal: From March 1-April 12, if you book three nights in a condo you get the fourth night free. Plus you’ll receive 20% off adult lift tickets and 15% off a massage at a local spa.
