Remember those controversial Sasha and Malia Obama dolls that have been the subject of way too many of my blogs? Well, apparently, people don’t want to bid aloha to them just yet. In fact, here’s some news that shouldn’t surprise anyone: The Obama girl look-alikes are HOT, HOT, HOT!
You saw that coming, right?
A couple of months ago the foot-tall dolls, which were marketed as part of the TyGirlz Collection, were introduced to the world. Sweet Sasha sported a pink dress and green leggings with her hair in braids. Meanwhile, Marvelous Malia donned a ponytail, green long t-shirt and jeans. The dolls were considered “cute collectables” to designer Ty (maker of Beanie Babies), not so much to Michelle Obama, who had just become the nation’s First Lady.
In one of her first official moves, the First Mom sent off a terse letter to Ty making it clear that she was not happy about the toy maker’s decision to market the plush dolls that not only looked like her daughters, but shared the same names as the real Obama girls as well.
At the time Ty insisted any resemblance between the plush dolls and the real Obama girls was purely coincidental and continued to sell the toys. That lasted all of 10 days. After that the Beanie Babies creator caved and ordered the dolls’ names be changed and production be halted.
Had I not been lacking in the sleep department (that’s never); I would have rushed to the nearest toy store and stocked up on the $20 brown-eyed girl dolls because I knew this was going to happen…
According to Beanie Baby sellers, “People are crazy for the dolls.”
One well-placed seller, who does much of his business on eBay told the New York Daily News, “It’s unbelievable and borders on the irrational. I wouldn’t be surprised if I got $5,000 for a set — it’s just that hot.”
Or people are just that insane.
Recession? What recession?
