Week 7 of Pregnancy

Welcome to your 7th week of pregnancy! By now, you may be experiencing a wealth of symptoms and emotions- all of which are normal. So whether you are tired, sick, or just feel a little off- know that you are not alone. Joining a prenatal support group or exercise class is a great way to get to know others going through the same thing- and you will be happy to have mommy contacts when your little one arrives.

What you may be experiencing

The influx of hormones in your body can lead to a long list of symptoms. You may notice that your skin in extra oily these days, leading to skin breakouts. Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser, and stock up on the water. The more you drink, the better your face will look. Even if it means a few extra trips to the restroom during the day! You may continue to be plagued with morning sickness, along with heartburn and constipation. Feeling lightheaded and a bit dizzy is also common, but if it becomes extreme or you pass out seek medical help because it could be a sign of something more severe.

Many moms-to-be may notice that some of their clothing is getting a little tight around the middle. So, if the opportunity presents itself don’t be afraid to unbutton your top button to give yourself a bit more breathing room. Wearing outfits with a little extra stretch may be a lifesaver these days.

Your baby

Your baby is growing like a weed right now. He/she is about the size of a bean, which is 9-11 mm crown to rump. Facial features are beginning to form, and dark spots are beginning to form on the face which will later become your baby’s eyes. Pits are forming for the nostrils and ears as well- though your baby won’t resemble a newborn for several more weeks. The heart now has two chambers- a right and left chamber which should now be rhythmically pumping away. The lungs have also begun forming, and will continue to mature up until your baby is ready to meet the world.

Concerns or points of interest

Do you seem to be craving all kinds of things lately? Well you aren’t alone. The trick is to recognize the healthy ones from the not healthy ones. If you seem to have a sweet tooth, try to substitute fresh fruit or yogurt. You will get the same sweetness, in a form that is better for baby. If you are on the other end of the spectrum and are experiencing food aversions- try to meet your nutritional requirements with a similar food if possible.

Unhealthy cravings should be discussed with your doctor immediately. Some women may crave laundry soap, clay, etc which could be the sign of a nutritional deficiency.
