If you have a Barbie fan in your home, then you might consider booking a flight to California before the end of the month. That’s when the curtains will be drawn on a real-life Barbie Malibu Dream House. But until then, you can try to snag a tour of an actual Malibu mansion that has been transformed into the popular doll’s dream home.
Toy maker Mattel recently hired interior decorator Jonathan Adler to replicate Barbie’s pimped out pad in a real-life 3,500-square-foot beach house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The home is being decorated to honor the doll on her 50th birthday.
According to reports, Adler lined Barbie’s bedroom with wall-to-wall pink carpeting emblazoned with her initial. He then filled her closet with 50 pairs of pink peep-toe heels and rows of sparkly dresses. In addition, Adler stocked the kitchen with cupcake-making ingredients and plenty of pink lemonade. The living room features an original Andy Warhol portrait of Barbie valued at more than $200,000 and a chandelier – designed by “Project Runway” contestant Chris March – that’s made up of over 30 blond wigs and took more than 60 hours to craft. There’s also an in-house museum, which houses 25 vintage Barbie dolls and rows of Barbie-related paraphernalia. But, that’s not all… Adler even placed a pink Volkswagen Beetle in the garage. (By the way, the car comes equipped with a motorized pop-up vanity in the trunk. Soooo Barbie.)
Adler calls it the “ultimate Malibu beach house” and plans to be there to show it off tomorrow night when Mattel hosts a Barbie birthday bash. The toy maker plans to make the soiree a star-studded affair complete with Barbie-loving celebs, such as Paris Hilton and Teri Hatcher.
After the party Mattel plans to allow select members of the public to tour the house, including winners of a Barbie contest. Then, Adler’s designs will be deconstructed and shipped to the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas to furnish a special all-pink Barbie Suite that will be available for bachelorette parties, birthdays or anyone who wants to live like Barbie.
If you can’t make it to Malibu or Vegas, you can settle for the next best thing—-Barbie decor will be sold as part of “Jonathan Adler Loves Barbie” collection launching in September.
