Do you have big plans for spring break? The weeklong vacation from school is traditionally a time when families hit the road for warmer climates, but with the economy tanking, an increasing amount of clans are planning to stay closer to home.
If you live in a large metropolitan area like New York finding educational attractions to visit during spring break is a piece of cake. The American Museum of Natural History is a hit with kids of all ages, many who are impressed from the moment they step foot into the building. The museum’s entry hall is home to a giant blue whale, and a rich collection of dioramas, which attracts thousands of families each year.
The Big Apple also boasts other educational opportunities, such as the New York Transit Museum, where your little one can study the art of subway and station design in an actual working subway station. Another affordable option is to take the ferry out to Ellis Island and teach your kids about your family’s roots. Talk to your children about what the world was like when their great, great, great grandparents came to the United States.
If you live on the West Coast, consider planning a spring break trip to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The building is known as one of the most kid-friendly fine arts museums in the country. Your children can view fabulous art and you won’t have to deal with dirty looks from uptight museum employees and visitors, who think kids are better off running around at the zoo.
Not too far from the J. Paul Getty Museum is the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. It too is well known for welcoming families with children of all ages. Not only is the museum accepting of little people with big mouths, it also encourages children to learn about art, through dozens of hands-on workshops. The museum offers classes in African-American quilting, Ancient Greek ceramics and Indian palm leaf bookmaking. While your kids are learning about new cultures and places they might not have ever heard of, you can take a relaxing stroll through the galleries.
