We happened to miss the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Philadelphia, the second oldest St. Pat’s parade in the country (New York’s parade has the title of oldest). Viewing parades are a great way to get some free entertainment, connect with your community and celebrate a holiday.
I also have some other ideas about how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You can have a fun time with your family and friends when you try out one of these inexpensive ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
If you want to celebrate at home with a St. Patrick’s Day party, you can reduce your expense by foregoing elaborate appetizers and food. Why not create a baked potato bar? Potatoes are filling and inexpensive and associated with Ireland. Choose fun toppings for your guests to create their masterpieces, such as different kinds of cheese, chives (hey they are green), bacon, sour cream, broccoli and more.
If your party includes kids, organize a shamrock hunt. Cut out some paper shamrocks from green construction paper. Hide them around the house and award prizes for those with the most shamrocks. Or have a treasure hunt with a pot of gold coins at the end that everyone can share.
If you want to wear something festive, you can turn an existing sweatshirt or t-shirt into something fun for the holiday by using some fabric paint or fabric markers. Some nice designs might include shamrocks of course, “Kiss Me, I’m Irish,” or the Irish flag.
If you want some green for the day, use green food coloring to turn your normal meal into a celebration. Why not try green pancakes, green mashed potatoes or green Jell-O. How many things can you serve your family that are green? The kids will really love this one!
Do you have any ideas for a frugal way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
