Have Fun in May

If April showers bring May flowers, then local florists should prepare for the worst, because our city will be covered with tulips and daffodils by next week.

Who needs to shop for Mother’s Day bouquets when you can gather blossoms by the dozens in your own backyard?

If your neck of the woods hasn’t been soaked by spring storms, then consider having fun in the May sun by visiting local botanical gardens for a chance to take in the colors of the season.

This year New York City and New York State are celebrating their roots as a Dutch colony by hosting all types of events related to Holland, including flower festivals in the Bronx and in the state capital of Albany.

The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is debuting its new exhibition, “The Glory of Dutch Bulbs” on Saturday, May 1st. The spring floral extravaganza will serve as the centerpiece for other garden displays. According to botanical garden staff members, the tulips have been subjected to different lighting, temperatures and watering schedules to ensure that they bloom perfectly during specified time periods. The exhibit runs through June 7.

Meanwhile, in Albany, New York, the annual Tulip Festival takes place May 8-10. The family-friendly event is celebrating its 61st year, and features the crowning of a Tulip Queen and 200,000 tulips on display.

Just north of the “Empire State” in Ottawa, the Canadian Tulip Festival kicks off on May 1st and runs through May 18th.

Flower lovers in the Midwest can have fun at another major floral event—the Orange City Tulip Festival in Orange City, Iowa. The event takes place May 14-16, and showcases the small town’s Dutch heritage.

If you live in the Great Lakes region, then head to Holland, Michigan, to celebrate all-things Dutch with the Tulip Time festival. This year the event runs from May 2-9, and features a Tulipalooza concert series, the Klompen Dancers, fireworks, a quilt show, trolley tours, and performances by a Dutch folk music group called Moederleet.
