Memorial weekend is one of the best times to hunt down those yard sale bargains, but even if you didn’t get a chance to get out there, there is still practically an entire summer ahead of you. Just think of all of the great bargains that you will find.
Yard sales are fun because you never know what kind of treasures you may find. Yard sales can also be fun when you haggle. If you have ever had your own yard sale, you know that there are some people that you are willing to give really great bargains and others that walk away paying the original price. Here are some tips on how to be the shopper that gets the great deals.
Some people act pretty snooty when haggling for yard sale finds. But you have to remember that the stuff that you are looking to buy is personal to the seller. These are items that were loved or at least owned by the sellers. If you admit that you absolutely love and item and ask for a deal, then chances are that you will get it. If instead you insult the owner by saying that something isn’t worth the price, then by would they want to see you go home with it?
I remember one of the first yard sales that I hosted. I had an item that I had priced for $5. The buyer offered 50 cents and told me that I would never sell it for more than that. I felt completely insulted and was happy when she left. Later, another buyer came buy and happily paid my price. She was so nice, I offered another item for free.
There is another lesson in here besides not being rude. And that is to not insult the seller by offering too low a price. While some haggling is expected, offering too low a price can stall things right there. Try starting at 60 or 65 percent of the asking price and then haggle from there. Also, anything that is priced at 50 cents or less usually shouldn’t be haggled, unless it is for a group discount if you are interested in purchasing several of the low priced items together.
