Cleaning out the stuff that you don’t need can be a great way to earn some extra money. it could be enough to pay for a month’s rent or your food bill. But you should know which venues will allow you to get the most money back from your stuff. Here are the different places to take your old stuff and what should go in each.
You have a few options when you are ready to turn your old stuff into money. There is the garage sale, the consignment shop, Ebay, online (Craigslist) or print classified ads and donation. Each place will contribute positively to your finances, even when you donate items. Let’s go through each place and list what sort of items do well. There will be some overlap of course.
Garage Sale: Kids clothing, CDs, DVDs, books and tools usually do very well when sold at a garage sale.
Consignment shop: Adult clothing, shoes and accessories will get you the most money at a consignment shop. Video games can be sold at a video game consignment shop, but unless you are trading them in for another game, you may do better elsewhere.
Ebay and online auctions: Brand name children’s clothing, video games and video game systems, collectible items including character toys, unique items, antiques, current computer software and upscale expensive items usually do best here.
Classified Ads: Large items where delivery could be a problem sells well in classified ads. Items include cars, furniture, swing sets, outdoor toys, high chairs, strollers, large tools such as lawnmowers and snow blowers, and large appliances.
Donation: Suits and older adult clothing, luggage, miscellaneous household items such as small appliances and dishes, small toys, magazines, lighting fixtures, single chairs, non-antique furniture and baby items are best donated. Get receipts and write off the cost that the charity prices the item. It is usually much higher than you would get at a yard sale. For example, a complete man’s suit can be sold for somewhere between $60 and $100, depending on the condition and age.
