Traveling for Genealogy

Doing your genealogy may lead to travel. You may want to travel to see the country where your ancestors are from, or you may travel to try to find a missing link in the records. Either way, you may decide that your next vacation will be one that involves your genealogy research in some way.

If you are planning an intensive research trip you should take time to plan ahead. This means that you should try contacting all of the courthouses, and historical centers that you are planning to visit to learn their hours of operation. You can often do this by searching online.

As you schedule your trip it is important to allow yourself enough time to research the information that you want to find. This means making a plan and choosing which lines you are going to focus on while you do your research. Take a hard copy of your pedigree chart and the most pertinent information to that particular line. You may also want to take a jump drive to store the research that you find. Be sure to leave a copy at home.

While on your trip, try to take some time to get to know the area. Looking at the records you may find where your family used to own property. Visiting the site may be nice. You may also learn stories about them from the local historical society. These things can help to bring your family history to life. Enjoy learning about the culture and the history that affected them.

Finally do not become frustrated if things do not work exactly as planned. Allow yourself some flexibility in case locating certain records take additional time. You may also stumble on information for another line of your family while there and need more time to complete that research as well. You should also be considerate about how your changes in plans will affect those who are traveling as well.
