The California Spangled cat was introduced to the public via a Neiman-Marcus catalogue! Engineered to publicize the plight of wild animals killed for their coats, this breed in all respects resembles a small leopard. The spots are usually blocked or rounded and they are often grouped into rosette patterns. The body is long, lean and muscular and the face is expressive with wide cheekbones and a strong jaw line. Rounded eyes set high on the head accentuate the animal’s “wild look”. But there is no wild stock in the California Spangled cat, which was bred utilizing existing breeds and augmented with “street cats” from Cairo and Malaya.
The breed is the lovechild of writer-director Paul Casey who visited Africa in 1971. Upon his return to the United States, he was determined to create a breed of domestic cat that looked wild with the idea of making people not want to wear furs that looked like their own pets. It took ten years for him to complete his mission and he especially picked breeds for his program for their specific markings, body types and personalities.
The publicity surrounding the cat’s arrival did raise funds for the cause of endangered cats in both Central and South America, but it also angered everyone from animal rights people to cat fanciers and Neiman Marcus who wanted their customers to buy furs. The breed has struggled to survive and is perpetrated by only a handful of devoted breeders who are dedicated to keeping this beautiful breed alive. The cat is known for its lo- slung body and its movements are very graceful. Fans of the breed say they only stalk in the parlor and hunt for toys. They love the company of humans and are curious, affectionate social and devoted to their humans.
