Yesterday, I talked about ways to recycle denim. Still have denim left around the house? Here are a few more ideas for recycling one of our favorite fabrics:
Denim Organizer
Can’t find stuff when you need it? Consider using the pocket parts of your old denim jeans to create an organizer. Cut out the pockets and sew several of them together to create an organizer that can hold scissors, notepads, pens, etc.
Denim Placemats
Chances are that your old denim is not big enough to make one placemat out of one pair of jeans. But, you can cut out squares of denim (even incorporating darker denim with lighter denim) then sew them in a patchwork pattern to create cool denim placemats that are easily washable.
Fridge Magnets
Just like you can use the pockets from old jeans to make a denim organizer, you can also cut out the pockets and glue magnets to the back to make great fridge magnets. They are good for holding scissors, coupons, notes – whatever!
Denim Apron
Overalls work best for this craft project. After cutting the seams of the legs apart, sew the front section together then the back section and you have a heavy duty apron for cooking.
Denim Pocket Purse
You can make a cute little pocket purse out of the back pockets of a pair of old jeans. These cute purses are just the right size for holding a cell phone and a small wallet. You will need to cut out two back pockets, sew them together (leaving the top open, of course), cut the handle from the hem of jeans, and then decorate as desired. If you are worried about anything falling out, sew a clasp on so you can snap the top together. If you don’t want a denim handle, you can use beads, rope, ribbon, or anything else you can think of.
Denim is a great fabric that doesn’t have to be tossed just because your jeans are worn out. There are many other possibilities for craft projects including denim tote bags (great for carrying to the grocery store), Christmas stockings, bulletin boards, and even bean bag chairs if you feel extra inspired!
