Transitioning your Summer decor to Autumn

Summer is drawing to an end faster than I want to admit. School starts in less than 3 weeks here in the south, so it is hard to ignore. As I look around my home it is clear that my summer decor has taken a beating as my house has been filled with kids this summer, so I am now making plans to transition my Summer decor to Autumn Decor.

Throw pillows: My pretty summer throw pillows are a bit tired from occasional pillow fights and from being laid on. To update my throw pillows I am opening them up and adding stuffing to each pillow to give them back their fluff. In addition, I am planning to recover them. Looking through my closet, I can see there are several winter sweaters that we don’t want to continue wearing. Instead of tossing them out, I will use them to cover my pillows. To turn a sweater into a pillow cover, you can felt them my washing in hot water and drying on high heat. This will shrink them down to pillow size. Then you can cut off the arms and neck area and sew them closed at the top and bottom, after inserting the pillow.

We have run out of fresh flowers from the yard to put in vases for the kitchen and dining room table. To continue filling my vases, I can switch to pampas grass plumes and eucalyptus branches purchased at the hardware store. A few silk sunflowers will help bring the arrangements to life.

It is also time to update summer winter treatments to transition into autumn. You still want to take advantage of as much natural light as possible, but the changing season requires more color and texture for framing the winter than your typical summer sheers. I like to add a touch of color to my windows during early autumn or late summer to freshen the window treatment. This can be done with a simple swag of pretty fabric attached across the top of the curtain rod, or a toss pretty pashmina scarf or saree onto the curtain rods to serve as a topper.
