Advantages of Working Out at the Beach

The gym is not the only place to exercise. During the summer months consider heading to the beach to work out. Not only will the change of venue inspire you to move more, but also the sand, surf and fresh air can add fun and variety to your workout.

Still not convinced that a trip to the beach can spice up your monotonous exercise routine? Then, consider the following reasons why moving your workout can do a body good:

SAND

There are a host of benefits associated with running or walking on the beach. For starters, the sandy surface has some give, making the exercise less jarring on your joints. What’s more, jogging along the shoreline provides numerous distractions. Concentrate on the stunning views rather than your watch, and you will realize how far you can get in a short amount of time.

If you are not a long distance runner, then get in some sand sprints. Simply remove your shoes, mark a start and finish line in the sand roughly 20 to 40 meters apart, and accelerate at full speed. Repeat five to 10 times.

Warning: The one disadvantage to running or walking on the sand is that some beaches feature angled surfaces. Before you start your run, scope out a portion of the beach that offers as flat a surface as possible.

SURF

Swimming in the ocean is great fun, but in can also be very dangerous. Before jumping into the ocean check the status on high surf, rip currents and sea life (at most beaches signs will be posted in the water is infested with jellyfish or sharks).

In addition, you should also be cognizant of the water temperature. Ocean water is colder than pool water, so you’ll fatigue faster when swimming in the sea. Also, keep in mind that if you remain in cold water too long you risk developing hypothermia, where your body temperature drops below normal levels.

Finally, remember to keep hydrated while you are working out in the hot sun. Drink plenty of water while exercising on the beach, and rest in the shade if you start feeling dizzy or faint. In addition, whether you are on land or in the water, always use a strong sun block and protect your eyes with sunglasses that provide UV protection.
