Low Cost Decor: Using what You Have

Here’s another way to recycle things you already have. Instead of making clothes into other items of clothing like discussed previously, you can also make certain pieces into home decor elements. One of the easiest ways to do so is by making pillows from unused clothes.

Pants are probably the simplest item to make into pillows. The best pants are dressy slacks or pajama pants that you no longer wear. You can make small accent pillows or cute bolster pillows from the leg sections. All you have to do is cut off the straightest area of the leg section, stuff it and sew the ends closed! Satin pajama pants make great bed pillows for the master bedroom or a frilly girl’s room, and even jeans will work, especially if you need pillows for a casual space or a child’s room that isn’t as frilly.

Button down shirts and sweaters also make cute pillows, and you’ve probably seen similar styles in high end stores. You can make your own for the price of fiberfill. Just button the shirt or sweater and cut a square from the main section, cutting through both layers. Turn so the good sides are facing each other. Sew both sides and the top closed. Turn right side out, stuff, and sew the bottom seam closed. If you don’t sew, use iron-on hem tape. If you are using sweaters, run a bead of glue down the cut edge with your glue gun to prevent fraying, allow to cool, and then continue as indicated.

How would you like some free pillows? Just use the shirt and sweater covers over existing throw pillows. You can unbutton the covers to remove them easily for washing.

You can update a room or bring in some color in no time and for very little -if any- money!
