10. Pull the plug
One study showed that low power mode (what your computer goes into when it is turned off) accounts for approximately 10% of all the electricity used in California. To make sure you are completely cutting the power off, unplug items such as computers, monitors televisions, DVD players, and microwave ovens.
9. Try telecommuting
Of course, everyone is not lucky enough to have a job that allows telecommuting, but maybe instead of working five 8 hour days, you could work four ten hour days to save on energy.
8. Digitize whenever possible
Of course, we all love our computers, but do you use an electronic version of everything? Is your calendar on the computer or does a paper one sit on your desk? Do you have a rolodex or are all your phone numbers stored in your computer?
7. Recyclable paper items
Make sure that not only is your printer paper recyclable, but also your envelopes, file folders, etc.
6. Consider taking the bus, riding a bike, or carpooling
Did you know the average worker spends about 47 hours each year tied up in rush hour traffic? While you may not be able to avoid traffic, you can make better use of your time on the bus, save gas by carpooling, and get healthier biking.
5. The thermostat
Set the thermostat a bit lower during the winter and a bit higher during the summer to save energy. Keep a sweater for the winter and a fan for the summer to help keep the office temperature comfortable.
4. Green Lunches
Bringing your own lunch can save energy by not taking the car to a restaurant and can also be healthier than fast food. Make sure you bring reusable containers and utensils.
3. Use care when printing
Do you ever print things you don’t really need? Not only are you wasting paper, but also ink and electricity. Avoid color printing when you can and reuse old sheets as scrap paper.
2. Non-toxic workspace
Make sure the cleaning supplies used are non-toxic (there are many on the market now). Adding a plant to your workspace area can help absorb pollution as well.
1. Turn off the lights
It may sound simple, but how many times to you leave for the day and leave the lights on in your office? If you work with someone, make a plan that the last person out of the office turn the lights off.
