You might think I am glad we homeschool so my kids won’t have to see the upcoming Presidential address to students next week that will be fed to school all over the country. In actuality, I will record it so we can watch it later.
What I am glad about is that fact that we don’t have have to participate in the debate or deal with the hysteria surrounding a simple stay in school speech.
Here is an excerpt from what is planned.
“At noon on Tuesday, September 8th the President will be welcoming America’s students back to school – after all, sometimes they need a little extra motivation after a glorious summer. The President has spoken often about the responsibility parents have for their children and their education, but in this message he’ll urge students to take personal responsibility for their own education, to set goals, and to not only stay in school but make the most of it.”
I an sure that in some parts of the country it’s not a big deal, but where I live there is a major uproar to rival only that of the day after the election. People were not happy then, and they are not happy now.
You would think this were the first time a President ever wanted to address schoolchildren. Apparently, however Both President Bush’s addressed schools over the airways as did President Reagan. So considering the severity of the arguments, There is definitely a double standard.
It doesn’t matter what side of the argument I am on, and it shouldn’t. It does bother me that the debate exists at all. So for that reason, I am happy that I don’t have to participate in it nor do I need to give or rescind permission for my kids to view the message… or to view the infamous materials that has preceded it. We don’t have to side with anyone. We don’t need to debate about the existence of “Presidential Worship” or “socialist ideals”. We only need to make an educated choice for ourselves regarding what our kids watch on TV.
