Our favorite family companions, our pets, can impact the environment in negative ways, just as we humans can. Earlier, I wrote a post about the dilemma of outdoor versus indoor cats. But let us now cover some ways that we can practice responsible pet care, no matter what type of common pet we own.
Kitty Litter
Cat litter can have a big impact on the environment. Did you know that those convenient clumping cat litters carry a two-part punch? The clay used in these litters is strip mined, which of course is bad for the earth. In addition, many of these litters contain silica. This silica dust is a known carcinogen that can be inhaled by both your kitty and your family.
It is much better to choose a biodegradable litter, such as pine, that won’t impact the environment.
Doggie Doo
Some dog owners are pretty relaxed about picking up their dog’s bowel movements. But not only is this unpleasant, but it can negatively impact the environment. Why? Well, the poop can wash into streams, and the bacteria from it can multiply and contaminate streams.
Obtain some biodegradable bags and dispose of the doggie doo quickly and properly.
Toys and Accessories
When you are outfitting your favorite pet with toys, beds and more, look for responsible items made out of natural materials. hemp ropes for dogs and beds and toys made from recycled materials are a great idea to help your pet reduce his impact on our planet. Also consider reusing safe items from your own home for you pet instead of tossing these things in a landfill and buying new objects. Old tennis balls, old towels and sheets and other items can be repurposed for your pet.
Each year we pour a ton of chemicals on our pets. From flea and tick treatments to shampoos, toothpaste and other grooming products, there are plenty of harsh ingredients that can be harmful. Look for natural products when you care for your pet. They will have less impact and be better for your health.
