With this economy, there have been some interesting developments regarding the buying and selling of furniture. Read this post so you can take advantage of buying and do the best you can.
We had been looking for a new dining room table that would seat all five of us and maybe a couple of guests as needed. We survived using a small game table for two years, because we didn’t want to spend too much.
We finally did get a great table along with the matching six chairs. The economy has really affected the used furniture market. Here is how.
With people downsizing and even losing their homes, there is a lot of used furniture that is now available. You may see this furniture posted on Craigslist, in newspaper ads and ad yard sales. This fact can be good news if you have a home that needs to be furnished. There is a lot of inventory to choose from, so you may be able to get exactly what you want. However, it pays to do your research and know how much something originally cost. You also want to make sure that you know if there is any wear or damage.
The problem you might face right now with buying used furniture is that a lot of it may be over priced (which is why it is great to know what things cost at retail). Some folks are asking up to 80 percent of the original price. Unfortunately, furniture depreciates after you purchase it, unless it is heirloom quality. Many people who are selling furniture now aren’t used to selling or buying used and may not be aware of the market.
Chances are pretty good though, that the sellers should be willing to negotiate, especially if the items have been sitting unsold for a while or if the person selling will be moving soon.
