If you hadn’t noticed, old is new this year in fashion. The same holds true for home decor. While this trend is certainly a side effect from a rough economy, you can’t help but be glad that you don’t have to spend a fortune on fall and winter decor to be in style.
If you are looking for some new items to update your home you don’t have to look very far. Here is where you can find decor items for fall and winter 2009.
Flea markets: Nicole Humphrey suggests some specific items to look for in Frugal Decorating with Flea Market Finds. Choosing crystal items that look good no matter how old and looking at old items creatively will net you great items for your home.
Second hand stores: Look for the same type of items in second hand stores that you would in flea markets, but also look for those occasional tables and chairs that you always meant to buy. I once purchased two bucket chairs for $25 each that lasted for 10 years that has been the envy of anyone who spied them. Be sure to drive a vehicle that will allow you to bring home large items.
Yard Sales: Many people doing yard sales have no idea about the value of items they are selling. Some of the best items to get for next to nothing at yard sales are Christmas village houses, vintage Tupperware, depression glass, and old fabrics that were never used that will make great pillows… but watch out for moth holes. Home made: Purchase a pile of embroidered sweaters and tweed clothing to make new covers for your summer pillows to keep them for a new season. At $1.00 to $4.00 an item, you can outfit an entire room with vintage style accessories. If you are a really ambitious crafter, consider making a braided rug. Remember, you are looking for “new vintage” not old and tired. Stay away from too much patina and yellowed or frayed fabrics. Instead buy classic antique type items, but only if you can get them at a bargain.
