Simple No-Sew Halloween Costumes

Whereas my mother could sew a bridge to connect Hawaii with California, I struggle to reattach buttons to blouses.

If you are as bad a seamstress as I am, then you might have never considered making your own Halloween costume. Fortunately, there are a myriad of spooky getups you can create without having to sew a single stitch.

Here are some ideas:

Spider: Use a pair of black sweats and a black sweatshirt. For the spider’s legs, use old black pantyhose and stuff them with anything lightweight such as tissue paper or fiberfill. Then, staple or glue the pantyhose shut, so the stuffing doesn’t fall out. Next, attach legs to sweatsuit and place black make-up on your face to finish off the look.

Static Cling: Wear a solid colored sweatsuit (all white or all black works best) and attach dryer sheets and other articles of clothing (socks, underwear, t-shirts, etc.) to the sweatsuit with safety pins. Finish off the look with teased hair.

“Happy Days”: Girls can wear a simple round poodle skirt, a white short-sleeved shirt, a cardigan and some saddle shoes to create the look of a “sock hopper.” Add a ponytail secured with a scarf and some cat-eye glasses, and you are ready for the holiday.

Dice: Cover two cardboard boxes with white paint. Cut out several circles from black construction paper and glue them in place. Cut out holes for the arms, and get rolling.

Train Engineer: You’ll need: blue jeans, a denim jacket, a red and black bandana and a blue and white engineer’s hat. Add a whistle and a lantern to complete the costume.

Pirate: Wrap one leg in brown felt to form a wooden leg. Use sailor pants, knickers or jeans, plus a striped shirt. Don’t forget to tie a bandana around your child’s head and place an eye patch on his/her weakest eye.
