I’ve talked about some of my favorite green celebrities, but now, even models, not always known for their healthy, eco-friendly lifestyles, are going green.
Supermodel Cindy Crawford is now writing a green blog for Vanity Fair. While it may seem more natural for her to be on the cover than writing for the magazine, Cindy had a green awakening after becoming a mom. She has started recycling plastics, unplugging appliances when not in use, drinking tap water, and using recycled napkins and paper towels to inspire her children to be good, conscientious citizens.
Canadian model/former host of MTV’s “House of Style” Shalom Harlow, Elletra Wiedeman, Daria Werbowy, and Selena Breed created the first ever green fashion show, FutureFashion. Shalom is a vegetarian who uses Seventh Generation products and carbon offsets when traveling.
Model Betcee May Lindstrom is part Cherokee and feels she has an “innate connection to the Earth” and an “inclination towards an alternate way of living.” She supports Rock the Reactors, an anti-nuclear organization.
Angela Lindvall, who has appeared on the covers of ELLE, Marie Claire, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar, is the co-star of Planet Green’s “Alter Eco,” a show about living a sustainable lifestyle. A vegetarian, Angela is the creator of Collage, a green living web site and the Sustainable Style Foundation named her the Best Dressed Environmentalist for both 2004 and 2005.
Josie Maran is another green model. A former cover girl for Maybelline, Josie launched her own environmentally friendly cosmetics line in 2007. The organic products are packaged in plastic that is biodegradable. Part of the profits from sales of her Bear Naked makeup wipes goes to benefit the National Resource Defense Council’s Polar Bear SOS initiative.
Model Summer Rayne Oakes graduate from Cornell University with a B.S. in Natural Resources and Entomology, so it is only natural that she combine her love of modeling with green causes. She has done interviews for Yogi Times, Healthy Living, The Lazy Environmentalist, Sustainable Industries Journal, and Experience Life. She has a column at PlanetGreen.com (“Ask Summer Rayne”), writes for Treehugger.com, and the Huffington Post. She has also been named the spokesperson, resident expert, host, and board advisor for the Planet Green Channel. In 2008, she wrote “Style, Naturally: The Global Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty.”
