Yoga Benefits for Menopause

Although the word menopause defines the time when menstruation stops, the process actually occurs over a period of time. This can begin as early as 30, but generally occurs between the ages of 40 and 60.

Another difference is how fast menopause happens. Although it can happen abruptly, for most women the change is more gradual. During this period of time, women experience a range of physical and psychological symptoms as a result of the hormonal changes.

Menopause is actually a natural process that doesn’t require medical treatment. However, sometimes women have trouble dealing with the symptoms. In the past, large numbers of women used hormone replacement therapy, which involves taking estrogen and progesterone. As problems associated with HRT, such as heart disease, stroke and breast cancer risks, fewer women are opting for this method.

Fortunately, there are many natural ways to stay healthy during the premonpausal and menopausal stages of life and reduce the discomforts associated with this time of life. One of these things is yoga. Hot flashes, insomnia, mood changes and fatigue are common complaints among women at this time of life.

Declining estrogen and progesterone levels are responsible for the symptoms of menopause. In the years leading up to menopause, often as many as five or more years before true menopause, the levels of estrogen and progesterone can alternately dip and spike. These fluctuations can result in periods of intense symptoms.

Yoga is known for emotional and mood stabilizing benefits. Restorative for emotional balance and soothing stress and mood swings. Inversions are excellent for irritability and stress relief. Each woman is different, so honor your individual needs when selecting a type, or types of yoga for your practice

Another benefit of yoga is the outlook offered toward this time of life. Menopause is often viewed negatively by mainstream society. However, through the practice of yoga, you will be able to recognize and honor the insight and wisdom that comes with the natural process of aging. The philosophy of yoga can help you pass through menopause and the post menopausal period with grace.
