How’s this for a different idea of a honeymoon? This couple chose to forgo the traditional honeymoon idea of a trip to some lovely beach resort or exotic place. Instead they have gone to Kabul. No, that is not a misprint. They are honeymooning in the war-torn Afghan capital.
It’s certainly a far cry from the traditional romantic honeymoon idea. Of course, this is not your average younger couple – all starry eyed either. The newlyweds, Maggie Heartsch and Jean-Paul Bell are middle aged. She is a nurse while he is a clown-doctor. Don’t know what a clown doctor is? I admit I didn’t. It’s someone, like Jean-Paul, a performer who uses laughter to minister to sick people.
As they travel around they will distribute gifts brought from home. Gifts like humidicribs to a children’s hospital or toys or children’s and baby clothes.
It’s certainly not everyone’s idea of a honeymoon. But it is this couple’s idea.
Maybe it helps some people see that a honeymoon doesn’t have to be about going somewhere exotic. When it all comes down to it isn’t a honeymoon about enjoying spending time with the one you love and getting to better know the person you’ve married? You don’t need an exotic location to do that.
Mick and I had a one night honeymoon in a Sydney hotel and then the next day we moved into the home which we would be renting. Was it any less romantic than if we had gone away? I don’t think so. Neither of us ever felt we missed out on anything. The important thing for us was that we were together all day every day. We’d been married several years before we could afford a holiday away.
Love doesn’t care where you are or even what you are doing so much as simply enjoying spending time together. So before you spend a motza on a honeymoon, consider is it really necessary or could the money be put to better use?
