10 Things I Hate About Exercise

10. It takes time. Every day. It takes time that could be used to take care of the laundry, work, or even just reading a book. With all of the running around to be done from errands to picking up the kids to taking care of the household and work, that it takes time is just annoying.

9. It’s not easy. I don’t care what all the books say. When you get started on any workout regimen, you don’t want to push past your own limits. A light stroll is a lot more comfortable than power walking.

8. It’s hard. This is different from not being easy. There are a lot of ‘positions’ and ‘exercises’ that are just darn hard to do especially in a fitness class. Imagine being the only one there who can’t clasp their hands behind their back and lean forward, raising your arms away from your body.

7. Sweat. Sweat. Sweat. I smell when I sweat. I have to have a shower right afterwards or I can’t stand myself. Then there are the clothes that I worked out in, can’t put them in the laundry because they’ll stink it all up.

6. Size matters. I’ll never be a size 3. Granted, I never was a size 3. At my most fit and trim, I was a size 7. I looked good. At a size 14, that size 7 seems like a lifetime away. I know intellectually that I won’t be a size 7 again. So is it really worth it to push down to a size 12?

5. It wears me out. I already chase around my tail constantly. Now I have to wear myself out on top of it? It’s better to do it at the beginning of the day? Where’s the energy going to come for the rest of the day? The last thing I want to do when I get up in the morning is hit the treadmill.

4. Bad habits aren’t bad in moderation. And having that third mocha every day isn’t limiting me. I am not big on denial. No one can convince me that carrots taste better than some chocolate. Granted, I’m not a big fan of chocolate, but I’m really not a huge fan of carrots either.

3. Power bars. Power shakes. Power walking. Power shoes. Power lunches. It’s all about the power. What if I am not into power? Seriously? I don’t like powering up anything. I’d rather just cruise along at a coasting speed, paddling as necessary.

2. Nothing works the way they say. There are no get fit fast plans. There are no quick fixes. Sure, it took me years to get to this, but I still think I should be able to pop a pill, drink a shake or do one routine that just undoes years of neglect.

1. The number one thing I hate about exercise? Muscle weighs more than fat. So you can lose 20 pounds of fat and put on 10 pounds of muscle and the scale doesn’t reflect the really big change. You have to measure it in inches. But I want to see the happy numbers on the scale. Four dress sizes later, the scale still reads the same. And it’s just not fair.
