What is Marriage?

What is marriage? As Mary Ann said, sometimes you could be forgiven for thinking that marriage is on the wane, that it is no longer important or a priority, that some people view it as a prison almost and a restriction of the liberties. That’s not what how I feel. What is marriage?

This is an adaptation from a quote on my calendar: Marriage is sharing openly, laughing often, trusting always, caring deeply. The quote came from my calendar and it actually says friendship instead of marriage. But since my marriage partner is my closest friend, I took the liberty of changing the anonymous quote a little.

For us, this weekend has been very much that. On Saturday we met our son and his family and our daughter and her husband at a roughly half way spot between where we all live. We live about 2-3 hours apart. What a joy to be together and to have three happy marriages and three generations of family spending time together.

We spent a great day enjoying each other’s company, celebrating life, love and happiness on a picnic near the beach near an area where children could play on the park and ride their bikes. It was a where the adults could sit and chat about whatever and that included the subject of marriage.

Yesterday Mick and I took our swimmers to church. After a great church service that we enjoyed sharing together we chatted with other happily married couples at church. We’d taken out lunch with us which we’d stored in the church fridge so we wouldn’t have to go home in between and then we put on our swimmers and headed over to the beach.

What a lovely day – swimming, walking, talking and relaxingr under the shade of the trees when we weren’t in the water. No, we weren’t doing anything startling, just enjoying being together, enjoying being married to each other and sharing our lives. To me that what’s marriage is all about.
