Tween Book: “My Life in Pink and Green”

My 12-year-old daughter is reading a great book called “My Life in Pink & Green,” by Lisa Greenwald. I took some time today while she was at school to peruse it. It’s a great book not only because it speaks to her tween age group but it’s also eco-friendly.

If you have a tween daughter I strongly suggest this book. First of all it features common tween topics including: make-up, makeovers and adolescent anxiety. The story is about a 12-year-old girl named Lucy. Her mother and grandmother run the Old Mill Pharmacy, which is in dire straits. To drum up some extra sales Lucy puts together her own little business. She offers customers beauty tips and free make-up applications.

I like the whole idea of a young person recognizing the needs of her family and stepping up to help. Too many of our youth today are more wrapped up in themselves that the idea of helping others-—even family members-—is a foreign concept.

Lucy also demonstrates great character traits, sometimes lacking in middle-school aged children. She rises above her insecurities and familiar tween concerns to stand out as a positive example.

The second theme that runs through this book is green living. Lucy ends up joining the Earth Club at her school. She becomes very interested in recycling and finding more environmentally friendly make-up products for her customers. From there she comes up with the idea of adding an eco-spa to the pharmacy.

In the end Lucy ends up discovering a city grant that offers major money for local businesses that “go green.” If you want to know how it all turns out, then pick up a copy of this book at your local library or bookstore. You can also find it online.

Finally, I have to add that the cover is eye-appealing and catchy. I can guarantee that any tween girl would definitely love and appreciate this eco-friendly tale.
