Tips for Shopping at Aldi’s or Price Rite

When you shop at the discount grocery stores, you will save money, even when you don’t have time to follow the deals or cut the coupons. These stores specialize in offering no frills shopping and then passing on the savings to you.

You generally won’t find too many name brands at these discount stores, which is usually fine for most types of groceries. Decide which brands your family must have, but first try the discount brand first. You might be surprised to find that you like it just as well or even better.

What are some of the typical savings that you will find at Aldi’s or Prince Rite or any of the other discount grocery stores? Well, butter generally goes for about $1.50 to $2 a pound, versus the typical $3 or $4 a pound at the regular store ($2 to $2.50 on sale). Cereal can typically be had for about $1.89 a box versus $3 or $3.50 at regular stores.

Discount grocery stores do charge you for the number of bags that they provide. This can range from 5 cents to 25 cents a bag! So, it is important to bring your own bags or boxes, in order to save. In all but the coldest weather, I find it easier to leave the bags in the car and bring the whole cart out (I do this for BJs warehouse store, too). Then I load the groceries into the bags that are in the car. This saves room in the cart for the actual groceries.

Don’t forget to bring an extra quarter with you when you shop. This is because Aldi’s asks for a deposit in order to use on of their shopping carts. This is a way to deter people from leaving the carts all over the place. You get your money back when you bring the cart back and dock it. This way, the store reduces expenses both in the cost to replace lost carts and the cost of hiring employees to find and return carts that are left haphazardly in the parking lot.
