Keeping Your Faith at College

Keeping your faith when you go off to college or university can be a real test for some young people. So what can you do to ensure that you don’t over commit and get caught up in the whirl of activities and neglect your spiritual life? Here are some suggestions based on the experience with our own children and those of friends’ children who have gone away to college or university.

If you know any people who are already attending that college, get information from them about the types of groups that are available, If not the college will always have a list of groups.

All colleges have some form of Christian groups and bible study groups. You should find a list of these on any information day the college has so that when the tome for college comes closer you already have a starting point of contact. Contact these groups, go along to a couple of meetings and see whether they meet your needs. Don’t put it off till you’re settled. The longer you leave it the harder it is to motivate yourself to go along.

Find out where the local churches are and see which ones have programs and services geared towards your age group. A lot of information these days can be found on line but that doesn’t substitutes for going along and checking them out. Yes it’s hard to walk into a place on your own so if you have an interested friend, you might go together. But even if you have to go alone, do it, It will only get harder the longer you leave it.

Another idea is to contact the church by phone and find out information and let them know you will be coming .That way they can keep an eye out for you and welcome you.

Most importantly, maintain your own personal bible reading and prayer time and ask God to show you clearly which is the right church for you and the right groups to join. God will always answer such a prayer.
