Sometimes the prices at department stores can be cheaper than the prices at thrift stores and even garage sales! Plus when you shop the clearance sales, you wind up with new, never used items. So, not only might you get more use out of these items (from lack of wear), but you can also gift them without guilt.
Over the years, I have learned a few tricks for shopping the clearance sales. Here are some of my favorite tips for saving big and getting the items that you want and need.
Shop off peak
If you can shop on a weekday and better yet, during the daytime hours, you’ll find well-organized racks and get the best selection. An even better bonus is that without the crowds, you won’t have to rush and can take the time to be able to sort through the bargains.
Do combinations
Just as you can save more money by combining sales and coupons at the grocery store, you can also save when combining clearance sales with other sales and department store coupons. Look for early bird specials, newspaper coupons, and other sales.
Know the best stores
Explore the clearance racks at the stores near you, and you will quickly learn where you can find what you need. Kohl’s for example, often has rock bottom prices for kids clothing (25 cents for footie pjs!). Macy’s is great for sheets and bedding, at least at my local store. Once you know what to look for, you’ll save time as well as money.
Ask for a bigger discount
Remember that stores want to get rid of clearance items. Because of this, floor or department managers have more leeway for discounting the clearance items even more. If you find a flaw in a clearance item, ask for an additional discount, The same goes for odd colors that would be difficult to match.
