Let’s Make Bubbles!

You can usually find reasonably priced bubbles at the store, but you can also make your own. It’s fun to do, and if you know hot to make your own, you never have to worry about running out.

Use clean, plastic containers with lids to store your bubble solution. Empty plastic spice jars work great, and short, wide-mouthed containers are a good choice for little children. They don’t spill as easily, and the wide opening makes it easier for little hands to insert the bubble wand.

Bubbles

Here are some bubble recipes:

Super Simple Bubbles

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid
  • 1 cup of water

Mix thoroughly but mix gently and try not to create lather if you plan to use the bubbles right away. If you are making bubble solution in advance, close the lid tightly and shake. Allow the lather to settle before use.

Super Cool Bubbles

This recipe makes stronger bubbles so it’s great for giant bubbles or bubble games and tricks.

Ingredients:

  • ΒΌ-cup dishwashing liquid
  • 2 cups water
  • 1-tablespoon liquid glycerin

Mix thoroughly but gently (see directions above).

Notes:

Do not use watery brands of dish soap. The brands that offer the strongest grease relief generally have the thickest formulas, and these don’t break down as easily in water, so they make better bubbles. Try Dawn dishwashing liquid. Choose the regular formula rather than “ultra” or concentrated versions. Citrus scented dish soaps make nicely scented bubbles.

Hard water is not very good for making bubbles. If you have hard water, buy a distilled water or drinking water to mix bubbles. You can usually pick up a gallon for less than $1.00.

You can replace liquid glycerin with white corn syrup found in any grocery store. However, because it is sweet, you should avoid using it if you have trouble with bees or other insects in your yard. It will attract them. Liquid glycerin can be found in many pharmacies or online, it makes stronger bubbles, and it’s handy for lots of other projects.
