Yoga Poses: Corpse Pose

Corpse pose (Savasana in Sanskrit) is a relaxation pose that seems fairly straightforward. However, don’t underestimate the importance of this pose and performing it correctly. Corpse pose is commonly done at the end of the practice, but can also be done to rest in between asanas when needed.

Corpse pose offers a wide range of benefits, including improving blood circulation, relieving anxiety and improving concentration. In addition, this pose offers several benefits for health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and insomnia.

To move into corpse pose, begin by lying flat on your back on the yoga mat. Stretch the legs out in front of you and let the feet relax and fall to the side. The arms are positioned next to the body with the palms facing the sky.

As you relax into the pose, elongate the body from head to toe and relax. Breathe slowly in and out through the nose and let each breath release tension from the body. On each inhalation, locate tension in the body and release it on each exhalation. Relax the body and the mind, clearing away all thought.

Stay in this pose for at least a few minutes at the end of every practice. The biggest mistake people make is to rush through this pose. Don’t do that or you will be depriving yourself of the many significant benefits corpse pose offers.

This pose can be modified, as needed, based on the individual. For example, some people who experience low back pain find this pose uncomfortable for the lower back. Use a blanket under the lower back for support to relieve any pressure or discomfort. The same thing can be done on any area of the body, such as the neck, shoulders or anywhere else you feel discomfort in the pose. The purpose is complete and total relaxation and modifying the pose can really help.
