How much are parents today teaching their children to prepare them for life? How many children would know how to respond in an emergency? Is it something you have taught your children?
Recently our local paper carried the story of a mother who considered it vitally important to teach her children what to do in case of emergency. From a young age she drummed into them that in case of an emergency to ring 000. That’s the number in Australia. USA it is 911.
The young mother, Kylie, taught her children from the time they could talk almost their address and phone number and about calling 000 in an emergency. Many of us never seem to consider such a thing might ever be needed. However Kylie suffers from asthma and thought it she had an attack, the children needed to know how to get help.
In the end it was not an asthma attack that caused the problem. The springs on her kitchen tongs broke as she was getting something out of hot oil. The tongs sprang open and hot oil splashed over her arms and chest. While she immediately ran for the shower not even stopping to shed clothes, her children who heard the screaming ran and called 000. Soon an ambulance was on its way.
Having been on the receiving end of a bizarre accident myself years ago with an eggplant that exploded over me, as I opened the oven and left burns on my face and arms, I could imagine the pain this woman must have gone through. Thankfully my husband was home at the time and helped me though it.
It’s certainly something for all parents to think about and drum into our children what to do in an emergency. At the same time, we need for their own protection, to caution them about not giving out their name, phone number, and address to strangers unless it is an emergency situation. Being a parent in today’s society is not easy but we need to equip our children in case of an emergency.
