What is all the excitement over thread count when it comes to sheets? You have probably heard people mention thread count, but you may have wondered whether or not high thread count sheets were worth the additional cost. Is there really that much difference? Actually, there is. Thread count is the measurement of how many threads there are per square inch of material, and the higher the thread counts, the smoother and more comfortable the sheets will be.
However, thread count is not the only test, and its importance is sometimes exaggerated. You also have to consider whether the fabric is one-ply or two-ply. Single ply in a high thread count sheet may make for bedding that will not hold up as well to wear or to laundering, as a two-ply with the same count.
Thread counts over 100 threads are generally sufficient for everyday use and are usually the cheapest. Many people prefer a count of 200 or more, which is much softer and more comfortable. Since the cost is not that much higher than that of everyday sheet sets, many people opt for 200-250 thread count sheets. Thread counts of 400-600 in a two-ply fabric will cost a bit more but will provide a luxurious feel as well as durability. While sheets with a thread count over 1,000 sound as if they will be pure luxury, such a high count is not really necessary.
Choose high quality fabrics, such as Egyptian cotton, as well as an optimum thread count for the softest bedding. You can often find high-end sheets at reasonable prices as they go on clearance or during “white sales.” As the next season’s styles begin making a showing, the current selection is often discounted.
Outlet stores and online outlets like Overstock offer great deals on a variety of beautiful sheets and other bedding options. I know I’ve mentioned Overstock before, but I’m so impressed with the quality, selection, value, (as well as the cheap shipping) that it bears mentioning again. They have gorgeous sheets!
