Make Mine Fruit

Fruit and vegetables experts agree, are good for you. They can cut the risk of some cancers, help in regards to heart disease and provide all sorts of benefits yet, they are sadly underrated by many people, which I find hard to understand. Fruit and vegetables are among my favorite foods.

When it come to fruit, I’m a big wrap for apples, especially Jonathans because they have that tarter taste. But they don’t keep as well as some other apples, and have limited shelf life, which is why orchards have stopped growing them as much. Cameos and Sundowners, and Granny Smiths are also tasty types.

Where possible I try and get my apples at the local market where they are straight from the orchard. Even with keeping them in the fridge, as the grower suggested, it’s hard to buy enough to last a month which is how often the market is. Mick and I eat a lot of apples. No matter how many I buy, we seem to run out about two weeks before the due date and the apples from the supermarket, while okay, don’t have that same crispness and taste.

Passionfruit are another favorite. At the moment our red passionfruit vines are providing dozens of passionfruit. We have three vines that trail over our back fence. They have taken over from where the two black passionfruit left off producing. Mostly they don’t get a chance to make it into anything. I just like to eat them in bowl on top of sliced banana. I always take either a banana or apple to tennis as a morning tea pick me up – much tastier and healthier than chomping into biscuits as others do.

Over the last week I’ve been battling a cold which simply won’t leave and so have been trying to add to my vitamin C by squeezing two navel oranges and having the juice fresh with my breakfast. Speaking of breakfast there’s also dried cranberries on the cereal.

Strawberries are too expensive these days in Australia at $3.98 and sometime more for a small punnet but grapes have come down in price and the red seedless gropes re particularly nice, I usually add some to salad as well as just eat them just on their own.

My favorite dessert is fruit salad made with fresh fruits and frozen yoghurt.

Growing up our children always had fresh fruit to eat. Start them off early on and they will acquire a taste for fruit. It’s not only tasty but good for you.

I’ve told you some of my favorites, now it’s your turn. Your favorite fruit anyone?
