Kindergarten Graduation Fun

My baby graduates from kindergarten on Friday. Only, you’d never know it by attending her school. Apparently, in the past there were cases where students didn’t get the green light to proceed to first grade, so to avoid hurt feelings the school decided to eliminate all kindergarten graduation ceremonies.

Given the school’s anti-graduation policy, I am planning to host my own commencement celebration. Nothing outlandish or expensive. Rather, I plan to invite a few friends over to party with my soon-to-be first grader.

Here’s what I have planned for the big day:

HOMEMADE GRADUATION CAPS

Materials (for one cap):

Plastic or paper bowl

8-inch by 8-inch matching card stock

Yarn

Scissors

Glue

Tape

Directions:

Turn the bowl upside down and glue a square of card stock on what used to be the bottom of the bowl (which is now the top).

Use scissors to poke a small whole through the middle of the card stock and bowl.

To make the tassel, wrap a long piece of yarn several times around your three middle fingers.

Leave about a foot of yarn on one end. Remove the yarn from your fingers and pinch together at that end.

Use another piece of yarn to wrap and secure pinched strands together. Tie, and then cut open loops on other side.

Push the long piece of yarn through the hole you made on the top of the cap.

Tape on the yarn tassel to the inside of the cap to hold in place.

The menu consists of kid-friendly foods, such as pizza, sandwiches and a 3-D dinosaur graduation cake. In addition, I will be making these kiddie cocktails:

SORBET FLOAT

Ingredients (for one drink):

3 ounces of ginger ale

3 ounces of orange juice

One scoop of raspberry sorbet

Ice cubes or ice chips

Directions:

Fill a tall plastic cup with ice, and then add ginger ale and orange juice over it.

Add a small scoop of raspberry sorbet and serve with a straw and little paper cocktail umbrella.

BUBBLE GUM MOCKTAIL

Ingredients:

Sparkling water

Bubble gum flavored snow cone syrup (I use Hawaiian Shaved Ice brand)

Plastic cocktail picks

Assorted gumballs

Ice

Directions:

Fill a plastic cup with sparkling water and ice.

Add bubble gum syrup to taste.

Garnish with two gumballs on a cocktail pick.
