For some families taking a summer road trip is a seasonal rite of passage. It was when I was growing up. Interestingly, a new study by AAA reveals that due to budget constraints more people are planning to drive to their summer vacation destination this year rather than fly.
However, there are risks involved when driving long distances. If you are planning to hit the highway on a summer adventure in the upcoming weeks, then consider these simple tips to help keep your family safe:
PARKING
Whether you drive a 2010 Lexus SUV or a 1999 Toyota minivan, you want to make sure you are parking your vehicle in the safest spot possible while you are tooling around on vacation. If you are making a pit stop at a mall with a parking garage try to find a spot near the parking office or in a place where there is increased foot traffic. More eyeballs discourage potential thieves. Well-lit areas are next best, followed by spots that are in full view of surveillance cameras.
When you are parking at a hotel or motel, park your vehicle with the trunk facing out. This is especially important if you are storing a bunch of stuff in your trunk. When you park with the trunk facing the aisle, more people can see if someone tries to break into your vehicle.
If you are forced to park on the street, try to find a spot within sight of a busy store or hotel entrance. Other good spots are under a street lamp, near a busy corner or away from low-hanging trees or thick bushes where thieves can hide.
LOADING AND UNLOADING
Don’t wait until you get to your parking space to rearrange the items in your vehicle. If you pull into your spot, and then take your most valuable items and pack them in the trunk, you are showing anyone within view exactly what’s waiting for them should they break in. Get into the habit of putting your things somewhere safe while you are either at your home base or destination.
