Birth Order and Your Frugal Style

siblings Numerous studies have determined that the order in which you are born into your family can affect your personality. While there have to be some exceptions, these typical personality traits can affect your frugal style. One personality type might be really good at saving with coupons, while another is better off negotiating for goods and services to save money. Where do you fall?

Only Child

I’m going to start with this one, since that is who I am. Only children tend to be big perfectionists and very responsible. They also get along well with people who are older than they are. Because of these traits, only children will do well learning and accepting some of the tried and true advice that has been passed down the ages from older generations. They tend to be good savers, because they don’t like debt and may excel at reusing items and doing without non essential items.

First Born

A first born child tends to be a good leader and highly organized. They know how to whip people and things into shape. At the same time, they usually don’t like taking direction themselves. First born children are good at coupon cutting and matching up the coupons to the sales. They may also be good with getting the entire family onboard with living frugally by giving clear direction and setting an example.

Middle Child

The middle child is in a tough position. On one hand, both older and younger siblings seem to get more attention for one reason or another. Plus, being in the middle means that you spend a lot of time trying to understand both sides of the situation. Middle children are wonderful at negotiating for what they need. They are creative problem solvers, which makes them good at coming up with new solutions for saving money while keeping the family happy.

Last Born

The youngest child tends to like a lot of attention and can be both charming and manipulative. This personality can get along well with others but tends to live in the moment and has the hardest time being financially responsible. A last born adult should focus on creating and sticking within a budget to keep things under control. Negotiating for discounts may also be a strength.
