Believe it or not, fairs are not all about deep-fried Coca-Cola, cream puffs and thrill rides. Many state fairs around the country offer a slew of educational exhibits that make learning fun for the entire family, including:
Michigan State Fair
The Michigan State Fair is held each August at the Michigan State Fairgrounds and Exposition Center in Detroit. The fair is one of the largest in the country and one of the most historic. The first Michigan State Fair was held back in 1849 and holds the honor of being the first State Fair in America.
In addition to having great eats and fun rides, the Michigan State Fair has long been regarded as the ideal venue for farmers to learn about state-of-the-art innovations and to compare notes about methods that work well for them. Fairgoers also get a chance to learn about the latest farming methods and get up close and personal with animals.
Nevada State Fair
The Nevada State Fair runs for nearly a week in Reno, and is known for its smart dogs. Each year Reno’s Livestock Events Center hosts races to the “Wiener’s circle.” The mega-popular Wiener Dog Race, which features dozens of hot dogs sprinting to the finish line, is one of the biggest draws at the Nevada State Fair. Dachshunds from around the region compete in front of thousands of cheering fans–some of them waving their own hot dogs piled high with ketchup, mustard and relish. Kids are encouraged to use math skills to tally times and make predictions on which pup will be awarded “Top Dog” honors.
New Mexico State Fair
The New Mexico State Fair is held each September in Albuquerque. The annual event is nearly 75 years old and is still going strong. What sets this fair apart from others is that it places a huge emphasis on the area’s unique heritage through a variety of exhibits and events. Fairgoers can visit attractions that teach about New Mexico’s Hispanic culture and view agricultural and livestock competitions, which reflect the state’s rural roots. There are also dozens of food booths offering regional delicacies, such as frybread and chalupas.
