I am very excited to be contributing a small portion each month to Home Business. You will currently find me blogging mostly for Parents, in particular on teens, and for Fitness. Home Business is a new topic for me but not a new venture in my life.
If there is one downside to working from home it is convincing others that you are actually working. I don’t know if others who are involved in a home business share the same struggles. It can become a real source of irritation for me.
With my family it wasn’t a matter of them being convinced I was actually working, they seemed to get that. It was a matter of them being able to respect my need for quiet and being uninterrupted.
I do try to be balanced in that I want my children to know I am here for them, yet at the same time I can’t be interrupted every two seconds and there are some things that can wait. I will be blogging more in the future on how to balance working from home with having a family.
Although that has been a challenge we have been working on, my biggest struggle is convincing others that I am actually working. Apparently for the longest time a certain family member didn’t think I had a “real” job. I learned from another family member that I apparently “don’t work.” I have to admit, that really got under my skin.
Although it may appear to others that working from home is the ideal situation and granted, it definitely is for me, it doesn’t mean that I have it easy. In fact I have more challenges to overcome being at home than I would sitting in a nice, cushy office somewhere else. I also have to be disciplined, which isn’t easy.
I have also had the struggle of others thinking that because I am at home; I am available at any time. I will also be blogging in the future about setting hours and schedules while working from home. This is especially true with it being summer and my children being home. Apparently other moms think that their children can come over at any time they want just because I am home. I want to scream, “Yes, I am actually working.”
You may not be able to get everyone else on board when you are working from home. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, bite your tongue and learn to say no. I could write an entire blog on saying no. Come to think of it, I think I will. Until then, enjoy working from home.
