Pillows and More Pillows

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to shape up a living room or a bedroom, turn to pillows. I have three sets of pillow covers for different parts of the year, and I aim to get more. Although I am definitely, definitely not Martha Stewart, setting out different pillows for fall makes me feel like something of a homemaker. I’m fooling myself, but a little self-satisfaction around my decorating skills isn’t a bad thing.

We have a couch and a chair, and both of them are relics from my husband’s grandmother. They are good quality, so we kept them. However, the bright orange and yellow floral print just wasn’t jiving with our desired living room design, so we have them recovered by someone who makes custom slipcovers. This is the in-between option for those who don’t want the poor fit of store-bought slipcovers but can’t afford to have a couch reupholstered.

Over time, the cats and the kid have made our couches less than gorgeous, although we can remove the slipcovers and wash them. Hence the other need for pillows: they are excellent at disguising many of the ills of your couch. Just throw a pillow over the saggy bits or that permanent stain, and you have a couch that looks loads better.

To match our living room, I have two pillows in reds and gold for fall and Christmas and two pillows in bright blues for spring and summer. I also have tacky Christmas pillows too. I combine these with a number of off-white pillows that I use in all seasons.

If you’re crafty, you can head to the fabric store and look for seasonal fabrics to play with. There are many that are multi-season and very durable. There are also supremely tacky Halloween and Valentine’s Day and Christmas fabrics – whatever suits your décor.
Choose the pillows to match the couch and other elements in your room.

Do you use pillows to decorate and disguise?
