August is State Fair Month

The month of August is primetime for state fairs. Fun! Yesterday the Wisconsin State Fair kicked off with a new addition to its food line-up: a Krispy Kreme cheeseburger.

For five bucks you can consume 1,000 calories in a single sitting by chowing down on a hamburger patty topped with melted cheese sandwiched in between a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Basically, the culinary masters, who designed the foil-wrapped heart attack, swapped the bun for a glazed doughnut and called it a day.

Of course, part of the fun of attending a state fair is seeing how far you can push the envelope, so for the really daring, there is the option of topping the doughnut burger with chocolate-covered bacon.

Fortunately, you don’t have to travel to Wisconsin to have fun at the fair. During the month of August, dozens of other states are hosting these time-honored annual fun fests, including:

NEW JERSEY

The Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, New Jersey, is once again hosting the state fair this year. As always the fair is home to some of the freshest products around, including hand picked vegetables, fruits and flowers. This year you can also pick up plants, fresh honey and farm-made preserves along with goats milk soap. A variety of animals can also be found on exhibit at the fair over its 10-day duration including cows, donkeys, pot-bellied pigs, Nigerian dwarf goats, Boer goats, sheep, and oxen.

Other fair favorites will also be returning to Augusta this year, including the kid’s petting zoo, the SCUBA tank, the giant sandcastle contest, the camel, pony and elephant rides, the baby animal nursery, the dog show and the paddling porkers. Also returning to this year’s fair is the annual Christmas Tree Decorating Competition. In addition, the ever-popular Artistry in Wood Chainsaw Contest will also be held on the grounds.

IOWA

The Iowa State Fair is a haven for agriculture lovers. Some of the highlights of the fair include the life-like butter sculptures, the Square Dancing Tractors, regional delicacies, midway rides, and big name entertainers.

CALIFORNIA

The California State Fair takes place at the Cal Expo fairgrounds in Sacramento, and features the traditional fried foods, midway rides, live entertainment and craft exhibits. In addition, the always-popular food demonstrations will be going on at this year’s fair. World-class chefs will be on hand to present delectable dishes made from fresh ingredients picked from local gardens. In the “Dirt to Dish” Cooking Demonstrations top chefs from across California will lead cooking demos that show fairgoers how to make nutritious wraps and low-fat frozen treats in their own kitchens.
