Help for the Fashion Challenged Parent

Do you have a mini fashionista living under your roof? If so, then back-to-school shopping can be a painful and expensive experience. To help the fashion challenged parent from embarrassing his or her child at the mall, consider this blog as a crash course in Fall Fashion 101:

Maxi Dresses: They are still here and they’re still hot. Fashion experts say the popular dresses are making a come back with dramatic prints and patterns. Personally, I think maxi dresses are better suited for dinner after a day at the beach—not for school. What’s more, I think the cut is too much for young girls. However, if your daughter can’t leave the store without a trendy maxi dress, then consider getting a plain one versus one with a bold print, so it becomes more versatile when paired with a cardigan. You might also point out to your youngest daughters that a maxi dress is not easy to play in.

Lace: A number of top designers featured white and colored lace in their fall 2010 clothing lines. I’m not a huge fan of lace on everyday clothing, but you might tolerate it on the edges your daughter’s skirts, sweaters and dresses. Though, if you have younger girls I would steer away from black lace. Lace tops may be acceptable for older girls, but if they are being worn to school I would suggest placing another shirt underneath.

Dark Hues: Seeing a child dressed head-to-toe in black is a bit disconcerting if you ask me. However, if your kids are determined to embrace the hottest dark colors of the season, then give them some boundaries. For example, have them choose items in neutral colors such as beige and tan, navy and charcoal gray. Go with warm clothes that will show off your child’s face and relay a sense of sophistication than sticking with all dark hues.
