Keeping up with fashion trends can be tough, especially if you are juggling a job, a house and a mountain of other responsibilities. So, when your college co-ed comes to you for advice… I mean… money, to purchase clothes for the new academic year, do you really know if your hard-earned cash is going to be spent on something fashionable?
Personally, I think the term “fashionable” is open to interpretation. When you are dealing with college kids, I think budget is key. Still, you want your son or daughter to look good while hitting the books, so how do you teach him or her to stretch their clothes money?
Here are some tips to pass along to your college-aged fashionista:
Jeans: Invest in a good pair of jeans that fit well. Skinny jeans might be nice for a night out, but when you are sitting in a lecture hall for two hours at a time you’ll want to be wearing something a bit more comfortable. Find a brand of denim and a cut that fits your body type, and then stock up on different basic washes and styles. This is an especially good idea if your college student doesn’t do laundry on a regular basis.
Sweaters: You can’t go wrong with a classic cardigan. If you have enough money splurge on one made of cashmere. If you are on a budget, then select a cotton cardigan from JCrew or Gap. They are sturdy enough to last through multiple seasons. What’s more, cardigans are very versatile. You can throw them over a tank top for a look that’s chic or place them under a trendy winter coat.
Dress Pants: Male and female college co-eds should purchase at least one pair of well-fitting trousers in black or dark gray with a wide leg, to wear on job interviews, for class presentations, or to recruiting sessions. A good pair of dress pants should be long enough to wear with heels, but not so long that they drag on the ground.
