How to Buy a Refrigerator

Unsure of what features you need in a new refrigerator? Here is a handy buyer’s guide that will help!

Top Freezer

Refrigerators that contain top freezers are a good choice if you are short on space or have a smaller family. The top freezer type of refrigerator comes with a single door and generally gives you the most storage space relative to its actual size. Single door top freezers are also very economical, making them a great choice for most families.

Side by Side

Side by Side refrigerators, in which one side is a refrigerator and one side is a freezer can be a good choice for anyone who needs a larger freezer. You can also get these models with water and ice dispensers while still having a moderate overall size that will fit into your kitchen. Some side by side models have one door and others have two. This is generally not a great choice for people who entertain a lot. Since each section is narrow, you won’t be able to fit large platters of food. A side by side model is not as efficient as a top freezer model.

Bottom Freezer

Bottom freezer models can vary a bit. You can go for a single door model or a french door model. With a single door, you usually won’t get a water and ice dispenser on the door. The advantages of having a bottom freezer is that most of your food in the refrigerator will be at eye level, minimizing the bending you will have to do. French door models will give you more space and all of the bells and whistles including a water and ice dispenser and several different organizing bins, such as the chef’s pantry. A side by side with a bottom freezer may be the best choice for a large family or one who entertains a lot.
