Eclectic Design

The term eclectic simply means that furniture and accessories are taken from different decorating styles and mingled together to create a one of a kind look. This style allows people to use what they have, and to use what they love, without worrying about strict rules regarding certain styles.

Today, many spaces are eclectic. In the past, making everything match was the goal of most homeowners as they began to decorate their homes, but today, mixing styles is definitely perceived as more interesting. You may have noticed high style rooms that combine several different styles or colors (or both) when it comes to chairs surrounding a dining table. This creates drama and encourages the eye to take in the whole space, instead of resting on the largest piece, the table.

While there is a certain richness in beautifully crafted wood furniture sets, there is no reason you can’t break up a set. You may find the look even more charming. Perhaps two dining chairs would fill empty corners in the living area beautifully, while your great grandmother’s antique chairs would look great at the head and foot of your dining table.

Using an eclectic mix can also help subdue stuffy, formal spaces. The room will still feel elegant, but people will likely feel more comfortable in it.

Finding a unifying element between at least some of the furnishings and accessories will help make things work together better. Tying things together will make the space feel as if each piece was hand chosen, one piece at a time to form a collection, instead of appearing to be a mix-match of hand me down furniture.

Eclectic does not mean chaotic, nor does it mean that you can just put anything in a space. It actually takes a bit more flair to make distinctively different pieces complement each other and the rest of the decor, but it is a great way to combine the different elements of all the styles you love and create a charming space.
